I agree that reforming ICE is important. But another thing that should be second on the list is reforming the Supreme Court. Increase the number of justices to 13, equaling the number of district courts; force a code of ethics on them that has teeth, enforced with clear penalties; and then term-limit justices to 26 years, staggering it all so that one justice retires every two years and the current president can nominate a replacement. I don't know if there's a way to force Thomas and Alito off the bench, but they are crooked and they need to go.
Two friendly amendments: court expansion should be FIRST on the list. Nothing else we need to do will stand as long as the reactionary majority is in charge.
And 13 is a minimum: more would be even better. I’m no legal scholar, but I’ve heard a few people who are argue in favor of a MUCH larger court.
I completely agree with you. We can't get anything done until we get rid of the Roberts Six. Thirteen is 2x six plus one more than the current conservative majority. I haven't looked at how other countries' senior courts work, but I think more than thirteen might get unwieldy. Having the next Dem president nominate more than four new justices might be too much. But, then again, the point is to throw caution to the winds and go for it - everything we need to do to erase and fix the Project 2025 mess.
Amen, Paul. However, I am convinced that a Democratic president will not take office in the foreseeable future. The Project 2025 guys have been planning for this moment for a decade or so and have finally achieve power. There is no way they will relinquish it, especially knowing that a Democratic administration will (might) prosecute those who broke any law.
"I invite them to join with us to create an immigration system we can all support, one that prevents illegal immigration..."
How about an immigration enforcement system that does not rely on deportation as its main mechanism? How about bringing illegal employers - employers, like Trump, who employ undocumented workers with impunity - out of the shadows and making them use E-Verify?
Thanks for putting that word in quotes. If I could banish one word from all politicians' vocabularies, it would be that.
Not that I don't think we have to fight, esp now, given the current state of the GOP. It's just that the word is so overused that it has become completely vapid.
The Dems need to go further with the ICE thugs. Not only will they be required to be uniformed and badged without masks, those that participated in raids like Chicago will be fired and prosecuted. Accountability will matter, not just for the street thugs, but for those that ordered the actions. Noem, Miller, Homan all need to face justice.
Another idea is to increase the size of the House so that there's one representative for, say, every 100,000 Americans. It can be done, and it would end the rural lopsidedness we've got now. 435 representatives isn't written in stone or in the Constitution, it's just a custom.
NO! Pete will LOSE even worse than Kamala did. I recognize Pete's intelligence, but see the HARM done to the world by losing to Trump in '16 then '24. Why run everyone off the cliff edge again, as we did with two consecuitive female nominees, this time foolishly trying to elect a gay man? The stakes of LOSING deliberately this way will be a door slam of heedless idiocy for Democrats, and very possibly a party-busting event that will disintegrate anti-MAGA organized party resistance infinitely. Not Pete's fault (IF he chooses to run), but we DON'T DARE to try to force this on the MAGA voters, who can EAGERLY vote hatred enthusiastically AGAIN.
Finally someone said it. Look Petes a nice guy but he had no business running for President, and was elevated to a job he wasn't qualified for. He's great on TV making quips on Fox News, but a president is more than that.
It is also an insult to LGBTQ+ politicians who are far more qualified than Pete. If everyone is stuck on "first LGBTQ+ president ever" then they really should consider someone like Sheila Kuehl, who, as a county supervisor in LA, is one of a few who run a government bigger than most STATES.
They didn't find it in the past, and so far the ones in DC have been spending more time trying to keep people out of their own party than they have on forming an effective response. To think that something will change by 2026/2028 is magical thinking at best.

Install, not nominate. Remember the Turtle?

In 2028 we must run a man—for a change!!
I agree. This country is still far too parochial for a female head of state. Unfortunately.
Pete Buttegieg.
