The lack of any set of moral principles is so very opposed to the “traditional” values the GOP always trumpets that the party’s acquiescence to Trump has elevated hypocrisy to a stratospheric level. Perhaps a new term is needed: There’s hypocrisy and now there’s hypocrisy at the MAGA level. Make America Gawp Again!
I'm not sure that Republicans have ever had moral principles. Unless they really believe the lies they tell about the economy, the deficit, the work ethic, and all that. In which case they just suffer from self induced stupidity.
But lying about EVERYTHING seems to be something new under the sun. An internet commentator on Russia under Putin says that under the old Soviet regime the government would lie about specific facts. You could believe them or not. Under Putin, the government lies about everything until the people reach the point where they feel they can't know the truth about anything so why bother.
If anyone in the Trump administration, including Trump himself, had the capacity to feel shame, it would be a huge help in getting back to some semblance of decency in this county. But, the inability to feel shame is a requirement to work for Trump. Indeed, if one had the ability to feel shame they would not/could not work for Trump. It would simply be impossible.
Paul is right. Say "who caress?" often enough a lot of people will start saying "who cares" as if they thought of it themselves. The rest of us will just say "what can I do about it" and give up trying to do anything about it.
But I think Paul may be wrong about this:
"the point being that when threatened with the exposure of their nefarious deeds, the powerful will commit even worse nefarious deeds to keep them hidden."
no, unless you think, say, that Clinton lying about sex with that woman is more nefarious tha having sex with that woman. I think a lot of people thought that way, or were led tp believe they thought about it that way. But the obvious fact is that Clinton would not have lied about it if he did not think people would think that "having sex" was worse than lying about it.
Ask your wife: "If I had sex with another woman, would you be madder at me than you would be at my lying about it?"
Maybe she would, but I can't convince myself that Nixon's lying about Watergate was more nefarious, than ordering.
But sometimes I really can't believe the way other people think.
personally while i think adultery is a good way to spoil your own heart so you cannot love again (this is called losing your soul by some religious people), I think that lying about it is the most decent thing you can do to protect both the wife and the lover. (or the husband if the shoe is on the other foot.) But you can't keep doing it.

He can get away with it, to the extent that he has, because he leads a cult.

seems like a lot of comments disappeared, at least from my operating system.
but maybe the reason exposure has lost its power is that the Right has gained enough power to do whatever it wants whether you like it or not.
