Mixing church and state is a vile concoction. It's been tried before, and always with disastrous results. One such era was called the Dark Ages, and for good reason. These right-wing pseudo-christian fanatics are going to kill American democracy if we don't step up and put a stop to their insanity.
I have always thought the anti-Darwin anti-Creation argument was stupid. The Trouble with anti Darwin is not bad science but bad religion. and the trouble with anti-creation was not bad religion but bad science, I would prefer not to have religion taught in schools. But my experience is that whatever is taught in schools, the kids and their parents will find a way to their own beliefs. it's just a fight the politicians can use to inspire their troops with hate for the other side.
Why don't we all move to Iran if we want a religiously owned government? Why is freedom of religion only for them? If they want to combine religion with the State when do the Budists, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, and atheists have their day in school? I went to 12 years worth of Catholic schools. If the want a religion class, let them go to a religious school. Leave our public schools alone! Public means for everyone, not just for a bunch of elitest, religious snobs who want to indoctrinate everyone with their warped understanding of God's word. By the way they seem to be experts at either ignoring or misstating the words of Jesus Christ. And by the way, their abortion stance seems to be all pro-fetus, and anti children and mothers.
I think you've got it backwards. Certain political interests were smart enough to see the advantages of getting "christians" on their side. The Dems were not smart enough to see that.
First, the "christian right" is not christian at all. it is a primitive pagan religion that uses the "Christian" brand because it has good connotations. Meanwhile the "Left " really does hate "the church" unfortunately it's the medieval church which hasn't been around for a long time. And they go out of their way make enemies of christians, for whom "christianity" is their last hope...neoliberal economics having failed them.
Second, there is no reason that "churches" should not be allowed to talk about politics. We all base our politics on our "beliefs." We would have done better to remind the Christians that Jesus himself suggested they stay out of politics. That might not have helped, but it would have saved ourselves from making asses of ourselves by twisting "free speech" to exclude religion from politics. So somehow we end up with a Supreme Court that endorses forced "religion' in schools and selling wedding cakes.
Even if you hate "the church," the "Christian right" (your caps), even if you hate Christianity itself (which just shows that you are as ignorant of christianity (i don't like caps) as the Christian right is....even if you hate people who need a "religious crutch" to get them through a hard life... it is politically stupid to go our of your way to make enemies of people whose votes you need...and whose religion actually invented religious tolerance...even though they have lost sight of it over the centuries...only to find it re-emerges from time to time.
Other than that, you are perfectly right about the horror that Trump and Friends are creating in the name of Christianity. They are not the first.
There is an old saying about the baby and the bathwater, but I can't find it in the Bible. I do find something about "reducing government to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub"

but that wasn't in the Bible either.
