I love this so much. Conservatism is a mental illness, and it becomes increasingly evident by the day. I pity conservatives, but I am not above mocking them for their foolishness and weakness, especially when those characteristics lead them to hurt other people. So let's mock the hell out of those whiny Republican babies, and enjoy the process.

My kids and grandkids live in the DC area and frequently enter the city. They are subjected to the horrors of free museums, picnics on the national mall, and - GASP - a great vegetarian restaurant. It gets worse! My daughter-in-law works at the Smithsonian and is daily subjected to clean and (reasonably) efficient public transportation. Considering she's watching the integrity of her beloved institution circle the drain, it's a lot to ask of a person.

An excellent strategy—and elegantly stated. I live in the Beverly Grove area of LA. My friends and i constantly comment on how like a small village it is. I seldom leave home without bumping into a couple of people I know or waving a greeting to someone across the street (yes, a lot of people walk in LA!). Any frothing Republican fear-mongers too scared to set foot in my neighborhood truly are the chickenest of chickenshits

Yes. Baltimore is like 247 small towns knitted together. Most people know each other.

Right on Paul! This is an outstanding piece. Mock them. Every day, every hour, every minute. It will drive them insane because people hate to be made fun of. It usually causes them to withdraw and walk away from the argument.

How about we begin with mockery of Sean Duffy, big tough reality TV star, acting NASA Administrator, Secretary of Transportation, terrified to ride the NYC subway. I guess he's afraid that he will be on Pelham 123 the next time it is hijacked by terrorists. Or maybe that a subway busker will be present in a station.

I follow you every step of this assertion and believe you've hit a nail right on its' head! I don't tweet, but I have a family member (bless his heart) who is quite myopic about Republican's aims versus Dems, and as the surviving patriarch of our fam can be quite annoying in this area. I think many of my generation (born 1949) were taught that it wasn't nice to "mock". But you know what? Desperate times call for a more desperate measure! I can maintain my comfort zone and "tell it like it is"! (tho, I will have to practice a bit)

Excellent advice Paul! Every NYCer should do this . NYC - the densest city in America is just teeming with vibrant life. Every scaredy cat GOPer , needs to be forced to have dinner at 9 o’clock outside in Greenwich Village among the thousands of young , middle aged & even elderly Americans enjoying a meal and a glass of wine without one iota of fear! I dare them to do it & then try to spin their BS that cities are ‘crime wracked’.

Personally, I'd love to run into Gang of Youths on ATVs. Dave Le’aupepe is damn hot and I am a huge fan of their music. Admittedly, the group is Australian and multicultural, so probably still a little scary for the conservative man.

“The reaction of most Democrats to Republican fear-mongering is usually to say “We too are concerned about crime! We too are tough! Which we will demonstrate by advocating policies that are, while not quite as draconian as what Republicans suggest, still pretty darn tough!”

This is just plain lazy. Name one Democrat who does this, never mind most.

What we do actually do—from center-left to left—is rely on statistics to carry the day. That’s never been enough to address the emotional (in this case, bigoted) side of the argument. Not that this can be addressed: Once someone is convinced that by going into a city they are inviting hulking black guys to mug them, there’s no changing their mind.

well the fastest way to get a coward to throw a punch at you is to call him a coward.

i sure would like to see the Dems come out with real plans to solve real problems. Maybe a video of streets in New York or Los Angeles not covered in blood or trash. Maybe a concerted effort to educate the people to save Social Security by raising their own tax one dollar per week per year. Maybe a health care plan that does not feed the people into private sector fraud and abuse?

so there it is. our political program is "call them names." send the kids out the sally port carrying protest signs. "orcs are ugly," "orcs are cowards" "orcs are stupid" "orcs go home. leave your loot at the gate."
